On June 28th, Chicago Inter welcomed teams from Germany, Poland and across the USA to compete in the second annual ChicaGO Beach Handball Tournament. It was a beautiful day at the beach with a perfectly-timed light rain shower to cool everyone off for a few minutes before the sun came out again. There were players on the sand from three national teams (Germany, Poland and USA) and they did not disappoint the spectators who came to see a show. The atmosphere was part sporting event and part beach party; thanks to DJ Insight who kept the music going all day long.
Besides being a fun day at the beach, the handball did not disappoint. The day was full of close games and many of them came down to shoot-outs. The game we were all waiting for, Germany vs. Poland, came together in the semi-final. Many of you may remember the Battle of Chicago in 2010 when the national teams of Germany and Poland played a friendly match here. Germany just barely came out on top in that first match. It seems Poland was ready for this rematch on the sand and took the win after a crowd-pleasing shoot-out. They went on to defeat the Chicago Hawks and took home the trophy. Chicago Inter was well-represented with the Hawks taking second and the Bears earning third place after a thrilling win against Team Germany.
“This was a great opportunity for us to introduce Americans to a new sport and to do something special for handball fans in Chicago. It’s a rare occasion when you can have players like Pascal Hens, Torge Johannson, Martin Ziemer, Philipp Mueller, Rafal Glinski and the Lijewski brothers on the court at the same time – especially in the US,” said Chicago Inter President and tournament organizer, Jacque Messel. “We were thrilled to have so many players from Germany and Poland join us and to have a chance to show them our city.”
It was a fun day full of spectacular shots, great weather and camaraderie among new and old members of our worldwide handball family. Thank you to everyone who participated and we hope to see you all again soon!
