West Point Tournament

April 11, 2015

In keeping up with what has already been a busy season for Chicago Inter, the men’s team took part in the Cpt. Scott Pace Memorial tournament in West Point, NY earlier this month.

As a traditional part of Chicago’s preparation for the US Nationals, West Point presented, once again, an interesting challenge and a chance for some of our newer faces to taste the thrill of handball in the USA.

The tournament started off on Friday, March 6th with an opening game against West Point Gold. After a day of travel, the start was slow for Chicago but we slowly set into our rhythm and came away with an 18-14 win to boost morale and kick off the weekend on a positive note.

Fuelled by the first day’s win, the team came into Saturday’s matchup with the Canadian team of Sherbrooke with a positive attitude and soon took control of the game, on their way to a convincing 24-19 win. Things then got a little trickier against Air Force as we were caught off guard by the cadets’ fast-paced game and had to rely on a last second score by center Ethan Pickett to claim a 23-22 win. Boosted by this win, Chicago headed into their final game of the day (against NYC 2) with a top-seeded birth in their sights. Despite the accumulated fatigue, both teams put some good plays together and Chicago came out with another close win to cap off the group phase of the tournament with 4 wins in as many games.

After clinching 3rd seed on overall goal differential, Chicago headed into the semifinals to face West Point Black. The relentless pace dictated by the cadets made it difficult for Chicago to impose their own game plan and we suffered our first loss of the weekend: 29-21. But despite the disappointment, the team rallied to beat Sherbrooke by 7 and claim 3rd place.

Thanks to West Point Academy for organizing a great weekend of handball and we look forward to our next challenge!
